Nicomachean Ethics
Aristotle
Aristotle argues that virtue is a habit you build by practice, sitting between two extremes, and that the goal is a flourishing life rather than a blameless one. The long section on friendship is the part most readers do not expect to find moving.
Why you should read this
This is the founding work of virtue ethics and still the standard alternative to rule-based and consequentialist moral systems, which is why almost every later ethical argument in the West has to go through it. Must read for students of classical philosophy.
