The View from Nowhere
Thomas Nagel
Nagel published The View from Nowhere with Oxford University Press in 1986. He sets the view a person has from inside their own life against the detached objective view that tries to leave any particular standpoint behind, and argues that neither can be given up and neither can absorb the other. This is a complete book rather than the selected essay the old link asked for, and the link is to the Oxford edition.
Why you should read this
Nagel's book extends his work on subjectivity into a fuller philosophical system, arguing that any adequate view of the world has to accommodate both the impersonal standpoint of science and the irreducibly first person view of being someone in particular. Demanding but rewards readers who already know his shorter essays.
