The Order of Time
Carlo Rovelli
Rovelli takes apart the idea of a single universal present, then rebuilds the flow we experience out of entropy and our own coarse view of the world. It runs in three movements, The Crumbling of Time, The World without Time and The Sources of Time, ending with why time seems to pass at all. Published in Italian in 2017; the English translation followed in 2018.
Why you should read this
Rovelli draws on physics to argue that time as we experience it, flowing and universal, is not how it appears at the fundamental level of reality, where events relate to each other without a single shared now. It is short and written in accessible, almost meditative prose for a general audience.
