Hesiod
Hesiod runs the universe from Chaos forward through the generations of gods to Zeus taking power, castrations and swallowed children included. It is the closest thing Greek religion has to an official account of where everything came from. The link is to the Oxford volume that pairs it with Works and Days.
Why you should read this
Hesiod's genealogy of the Greek gods is among the earliest surviving works of Greek literature alongside Homer, and it is the closest thing antiquity left to a systematic account of Greek myth's origins. Read this for the source material behind later mythology rather than for narrative pleasure.
