Ficciones
Jorge Luis Borges
Ficciones comes in two parts: The Garden of Forking Paths, eight stories published in 1941, and Artifices, six more added in 1944, when the book took this title. Borges expanded Artifices to nine stories for the 1956 edition. Pierre Menard rewrites Don Quixote word for word and produces a richer book; the Library of Babel holds every possible arrangement of letters and therefore tells you nothing.
Why you should read this
This collection contains some of Borges's most frequently anthologized stories, built from devices such as invented book reviews and fictional scholarly apparatus rather than conventional narrative, and is commonly used as the entry point to his work. Best for readers new to Borges who want a manageable introduction rather than his complete stories.
