Lysistrata
Aristophanes
The women of Greece agree to withhold sex until their husbands end the Peloponnesian War, and seize the treasury on the Acropolis to fund the strike. Staged while the actual war was still going badly for Athens.
Why you should read this
One of the best-preserved examples of Athenian Old Comedy, this play is built as a satirical anti-war fantasy rather than the more character-driven New Comedy that followed later. Read it for bawdy political satire rather than for realistic domestic humor.
