Season of Migration to the North

Tayeb Salih

A Sudanese narrator comes home from study in England to his village on the Nile and finds Mustafa Sa'eed, another returnee, whose years in London left a trail of dead women behind him. Salih published it serially in the Beirut journal Hiwar in 1966, and Dar al-Awda issued it as a book in Beirut the same year; Denys Johnson-Davies translated it for the Heinemann African Writers Series in 1969.

Why you should read this

The novel the Arab Literary Academy named the most important Arabic novel of the twentieth century, a designation that has held up in how it gets taught since. It answers colonial-era travel narratives from the other direction, and assumes some familiarity with that canon to land its full effect.
