Half of a Yellow Sun

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Ugwu, a houseboy; Olanna, a professor's mistress; and Richard, an English writer who cannot quite belong, live through Nigeria's slide into the Biafran war and the famine that ended it. Adichie keeps her attention on kitchens, love affairs and small betrayals while the country comes apart around them. It won the Women's Prize for Fiction and was later voted that prize's Winner of Winners.

Why you should read this

This is the novel that won the Orange Prize for fiction for its multi-vantage account of the Nigerian Civil War, moving between different social positions inside the same catastrophe. It assumes no prior knowledge of Biafra's history, laying in enough context to work as both novel and introduction.
