The Brothers Karamazov
Fyodor Dostoevsky
Three brothers and their squalid father circle each other until the father is killed and the wrong son is tried for it. The Grand Inquisitor chapter, where Christ returns and is arrested by the Church, is the passage people carry around for the rest of their lives.
Why you should read this
Dostoevsky's last novel is built more on extended philosophical dialogue than on conventional scene-setting, with one embedded parable of religious argument still frequently taught on its own in philosophy and theology courses. Expect long argument and a slow build rather than plot momentum.
