The Idiot
Fyodor Dostoevsky
Prince Myshkin returns to St Petersburg from a Swiss sanatorium, honest and epileptic and incapable of calculation, and is pulled apart between Nastasya Filippovna and Aglaya while the merchant Rogozhin circles. Dostoevsky serialised it in The Russian Messenger across 1868 and 1869.
Why you should read this
Dostoevsky built this novel around a genuinely good man set loose in a society that cannot make sense of him, following his own stated aim to render a positively beautiful human being. It suits readers who want moral idealism tested against the world rather than the psychological extremity of his other novels.
