The Bhagavad Gita
Vyasa
Arjuna refuses to fight his own relatives, and Krishna answers him across eighteen chapters on action, detachment and devotion. Lifted out of the Mahabharata and read on its own for centuries. The link is to Edwin Arnold's Victorian verse translation, The Song Celestial.
Why you should read this
Though embedded in the Mahabharata, this dialogue on duty and the paths of spiritual discipline is standardly read as a self-contained philosophical text in its own right. It has been especially influential on modern spiritual and reform movements, including its documented influence on Gandhi and Thoreau.
