Thinking
Hannah Arendt
Thinking is the first volume of The Life of the Mind, published in 1978, three years after Arendt's death in 1975. She separates thinking from knowing and argues that the activity leaves no product behind, which is why from the outside it looks like idleness. The link is to the combined Harcourt edition, which carries Willing in the same volume.
Why you should read this
The first volume of Arendt's unfinished Life of the Mind, examining thinking as a mental activity distinct from knowing or reasoning toward conclusions. It grew out of her attempt to understand how thoughtlessness, rather than wickedness, could produce atrocity.
