Celestial Mirror: The Astronomical Observatories of Jai Singh II
Barry Perlus
Masonry the size of buildings, built to read the sky to the second, documented instrument by instrument.
Why you should read this
Perlus spent decades photographing the Jantar Mantar observatories that Jai Singh II built across northern India in the eighteenth century, masonry instruments designed for naked-eye astronomical precision. A visual record for readers curious about pre-telescope astronomy as architecture rather than as theory.
