The Memory of Animals
Claire Fuller
Neffy takes part in a vaccine trial in London as an epidemic empties the city, and is left in the unit with four other volunteers after the staff stop coming. Between sessions she writes letters to an octopus she once cared for. The novel was published in 2023; the link is the US edition.
Why you should read this
A near-future pandemic novel from a Costa Award-winning author who typically works in quiet, character-driven speculative fiction rather than fast-moving science fiction. Suits readers who want interior, unhurried writing wrapped around a high-concept premise rather than crisp answers.
