The Sentence

Louise Erdrich

Tookie works at a Native American bookstore in Minneapolis and is haunted by Flora, a customer who died. The novel runs from November 2019 to November 2020, so the pandemic and the protests after George Floyd's killing happen around her, and Ojibwe and Potawatomi ideas about the dead run through it. Harper published it on 9 November 2021.

Why you should read this

This is a ghost story where the haunting carries guilt rather than dread, and it doubles as a book about books, with Erdrich writing herself in as a character. Fair warning that it sits squarely inside 2020 if you would rather not go back there.
