Case Study
Graeme Macrae Burnet
A woman convinced that the therapist Collins Braithwaite drove her sister to suicide books appointments with him under a false name and writes up each session in a notebook. Her notebooks are interleaved with a biography of Braithwaite, and the two accounts do not agree. Saraband published it as a hardback original on 7 October 2021 and it was longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2022.
Why you should read this
Presented as a found notebook framed by a skeptical editor's footnotes, this is a novel that plays with the unreliable-narrator tradition of psychological case histories, in the vein of R. D. Laing's anti-psychiatry writing. It was longlisted for the Booker Prize, and its pleasure is in not knowing how much of the account to trust.
