The Last Mughal
William Dalrymple
Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, and the collapse of Delhi in the rebellion of 1857. Dalrymple worked from the Mutiny Papers, a Persian and Urdu archive largely unused before, with the scholar Mahmood Farooqui, and found further prison records in Burma's national archives. The result gives the Indian participants as much weight as the British ones.
Why you should read this
A history of the 1857 uprising centered on Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, William Dalrymple's book draws heavily on Persian and Urdu court records that earlier English-language histories of the rebellion had not used. Best for readers who want the uprising narrated from the Mughal court's side rather than the British administrative one.
