The Discovery of India
Jawaharlal Nehru
Nehru wrote it between April and September 1944 while imprisoned at Ahmadnagar Fort for his part in the Quit India movement, and it runs from the Indus Valley to the British Raj by way of religion, language, art and the Congress. The Signet Press in Calcutta published it in 1946. The passages about his imprisonment and his wife's death sit inside the history rather than beside it.
Why you should read this
Nehru's history of India, written from prison during the Quit India detention of 1942 to 1945 and tracing Indian civilization from antiquity up to the independence movement he was himself leading. It suits readers interested in how India's first prime minister understood the country's past, as much as in the history itself.
