Beyond Good and Evil

Friedrich Nietzsche

Nietzsche published it at his own expense in 1886, through C.G. Naumann of Leipzig. The book argues that moral systems are expressions of particular kinds of life rather than discoveries about the world. This edition is the Hollingdale translation for Penguin.

Why you should read this

A critique of the philosophical tradition's assumption that truth and morality can be established from a neutral, disinterested standpoint, written in aphorisms rather than sustained argument. It assumes some grounding in the history of philosophy, since it argues by allusion as much as by direct claim.
