The Open Society and Its Enemies

Karl Popper

Popper attacks the idea that history moves toward a knowable destination, and prosecutes Plato in the first volume and Hegel and Marx in the second. Routledge published it in two volumes in 1945, The Spell of Plato and The High Tide of Prophecy: Hegel, Marx, and the Aftermath. The edition linked here is Princeton's single volume, which carries both.

Why you should read this

Written during the Second World War, this is Popper's defense of liberal democracy against what he saw as the totalitarian implications running through Plato, Hegel and Marx.
