The Lives of the Artists
Giorgio Vasari
Vasari knew several of his subjects. Unreliable throughout, essential anyway, and very good company.
Why you should read this
Vasari's collection of artist biographies, running from early Florentine painters through Michelangelo, effectively invented art history as a genre and set a pattern of individual genius that later historians spent centuries arguing against. Read as a primary source and as the origin point of a whole way of writing about art.
