Capital, Volume I

Karl Marx

Marx published this volume in his lifetime; Engels assembled Volumes II and III from the notebooks after Marx died in 1883. The book builds from the commodity to surplus value to the length of the working day, with long chapters drawn from the reports of British factory inspectors. This edition is Volume I alone, in the Fowkes translation with Ernest Mandel's introduction.

Why you should read this

This is the foundational text of Marxist economics, opening with an analysis of the commodity form before building toward the theory of surplus value and capital accumulation. Dense and rigorously structured, it rewards readers willing to work through its early chapters on value theory before the argument's payoff arrives.
